GT&F: #4 Warren Central opens with wins over #13 North Central, #12 HSE

By E. Shawn Aylsworth

INDIANAPOLIS – Fourth-ranked host Warren Central got the girls track & field outdoor season started off in style on a warm, cloudless day March 23 by winning seven of 16 events in a triangular defeat of No. 13 North Central (Indianapolis) and 12th-ranked Hamilton Southeastern.
The defending state runner-up Warriors – the back-to-back-to-back state champion from 2006 through 2008 – totaled 67 points to outdistance North Central (54) and HSE (46). Warren was led by a pair of relay victories as the Warriors took the 4×100-meter relay in :49.0 and the 4×400-meter relay (time not available).
Defending 400-meter state champion junior Logan Hayes won the 100 in :12.2, while classmate Latisha Martin took the 200 in :25.4. Freshman Dajaie Clay began her career in impressive fashion by winning the high jump with a leap of 5’2”, and the Warriors also picked up victories in the 400 and long jump.
North Central captured four events, led by a sweep of the hurdles from junior Anetra Brown (:15.6 in the 100, :47.4 in the 300). The Panthers’ other winners were sophomore Brenna Poulsen (5:15.6 in the 1600) and sophomore Nariah Taylor (41’1” in the shot put).
Hamilton Southeastern had five winners on the day, including the 4×800 relay unit of Katlyn Sloan, Emily Wagoner, Caroline Cieciura, and Emily Mastronicola in a time of 10:35.3. Other Royal first-place finishers were Jordan Tatom in the 800 meters (2:25.7), Brooke Morgan in the 3200 (11:41), Jenna Engelberth in the discus (107’ 11”), and Kandace Sloan in the pole vault (8’ 6”).
